RISK SOCIETY AND THE PRINCIPLE OF INFORMATION:
An approach to food safety in the production of transgenic
products in Brazil
ABSTRACT
This article was conceived upon bibliographical research and documents
supported by the current Brazilian legislation. It begins with a brief state-
ment on the expansion of transgenic crops in Brazil and the consequent
increase in the use of pesticides, very common in the modern risk society.
Then it addresses concepts and standards on food safety and the right to
proper feeding, thus, reaching the principle of information in the consump-
tion of GM food, as last. In such context, it shows that the lack of reporting
risk contributes to the perpetuation of organized irresponsibility and food
insecurity. However, it is concluded that the principle of information can
serve as a subsidy to adequate food, since the effectiveness of the right
to information by labeling and spreading information about GM products
can ensure effective food safety to a given population, by allowing consum-
ers to choose from their favorite food options.
