RESUMEN
Tras haberse realizado una actualización bibliométrica del número de artículos publicados sobre
América Latina como tema principal de estudio en las revistas Journal of World History y Journal of
Global History, se ratica que existe una periferización del continente. El objetivo del presente artículo
es cuestionar si lo anterior es un fenómeno cuantitativo o si existen algunas excepciones al respecto; es
decir, ¿cuáles son los factores institucionales que subyacen a ese fenómeno? La exposición se divide
en tres partes. Primero, se detallan los hallazgos relacionados con la actualización bibliométrica; luego,
se exponen cuatro ejemplos donde el papel de América Latina es relevante en narraciones inuyentes
que se conectan con la historia global; por último, se exponen algunos factores con los que se intenta
explicar la naturaleza de esas manifestaciones, lo que arroja un panorama de luces y sombras sobre
América Latina en las interpretaciones de historia global.

LIGHT AND SHADOW ON LATIN AMERICA IN A GLOBAL
HISTORY
ABSTRACT
After a bibliometric update of the number of articles published on Latin America as the main topic
of study in the Journal of World History and Journal of Global History, it was ratied that there is
a peripheralization of the continent. The objective of this article is to question whether this is a quantitative
phenomenon or if there are exceptions in this regard; that is, what are the institutional factors that
underlie this phenomenon? The exposition is divided in three parts. First, the ndings related to the
bibliometric update are detailed; then, four examples in which the role of Latin America is relevant
in inuential narratives that connect with global history are presented; nally, some factors that try to
explain the nature of these manifestations are shown, displaying a panorama of lights and shadows on
Latin America in the interpretations of global history.
