Abstract: In the south of Santa Catarina, Brazil, especially in the city of
Criciúma, the private companies and women’s organizations were responsible
for the most of the support services to mothers and children living in poverty.
Interacting and complementing the welfare provided by the state, women’s
associations were important to develop a helping network specialized in the
mining population. This approach between government and women’s asso-
ciations complemented the Welfare State systems because most of them,
especially those directed to motherhood and childhood, were taken over by
women’s organizations that have dedicated to reduce impacts of local and
regional economy on the lives of mothers and children.
